RPG’s are the pinnacle of gaming?

I want to present a bold statement here, that I would like to discuss with you guys. It is about a genre that most collector’s love and not only because of the overall rarity and price ;)

If someone would ask you what you consider to be the 3 most important things in life, what would you answer?
Wealth, fortune, health, a job, kids, a PS3? Everyone has different priorities in life and different opinions on what is important. But I think it would be safe to say that most people will include wealth and love (family/friends/partner) in their list.

Now let’s distill that first thing, wealth.. why does one want to acquire wealth? What would you do if you were to become wealthy?
You would buy things you’d love to have, you would buy other people things to show them you love them, you could provide for the persons you love and you can afford to do the things you love.
So actually wealth is not a primary goal, it is only a means to recieve and show love!

If we translate this to gaming (something we all connect on).. what type of game captures that most important aspect of life the fullest?
You can love to drive and tune cars in Gran Turismo, some people love to “pwn” online in games of Modern Warfare 2 and others love to kick someones ass in Street Fighter 4. But what genre stands or falls with it’s ability to generate love from the player? The Role Playing Game!

Even if a RPG has a great battle system, or a great level up scheme.. if the game doesn’t manage to get you to love the story and the characters, you’re not gonna spend 50 hours reaching the end. (some exceptions made) You finish a RPG with 50+ hours on the clock because you love your characters, you want to see them develop and you want to know how their story goes.

Therefore I declare that RPG’s are the pinnacle of gaming, because they are not just entertainment.. they capture the most important thing in life; love!

true.. so would you consider games like GT a racing-rpg?
where do you draw the line :)

"the question with Gran Turismo etc is.. do you consider unlocking and collecting objects/cars/tracks etc a RPG element?"

Yes. But you can also improve the cars with parts can you not?

i can't move the comments.. so copy paste them please! :P

damn....my posting belongs to your other topic :D
can you maybe put it in the topic above this one???

I have the games in so called seal kings and all the games are in boxes. I wanna have some showcases...hope I can get them in some month.

Let me the first to say, *ahem* "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo......................"

;)

specifyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Very nice entry. I completely agree here.
It was the same way in my "collecting career".
First I wanted to have the games which I had as a kid. Then I wanted every RPG from this area. I noticed that I do not have the time to play them all and so I decided to collect the games sealed.

And now, some years later, I have approx 600 sealed games for PS1 and PS2.

wow, that is an amazing amount of sealed games you've got there!
i wonder, how do you store them to prevent damage to the seals?

the question with Gran Turismo etc is.. do you consider unlocking and collecting objects/cars/tracks etc a RPG element?
Would Mario bros have rpg elements then because you collect coins (and other stuff in the later games)?

i think the line for me is with collecting things that actually make your experience or character/vehicle better.. thus strengthening the bond you have with that char/car
With GT the car becomes truly "yours' when you tweak and customize it to your wishes.. like a rpg character is equiped and skilled to my wishes

maybe GT wasn't the best example and picking a game like Mario Kart would be better, where you only unlock extra's and don't enhance your "self"

I'm forced to agree. The games that best elicited an emotional response from me have been RPGs (or Metal Gear Solid games) they tend to have excellent story telling, and really go out of their way to make you care about the characters.

Even non-RPGs that I have enjoyed, had RPG elements. Like your Gran Turismo example. Even though I hate racing games.
